Greek heritage language education in Canada is at a crossroads. As community schools face increasing challenges, and new opportunities emerge through technology and policy, it is crucial to discuss how to preserve and strengthen Greek language learning across generations.
To address these issues, the Centre for European, and Eurasian Studies (CEES), in collaboration with the HHF Chair of Modern Greek History and the Hellenic Heritage Foundation, is hosting a special event on April 10, 2025, at the University of Toronto. This event will bring together educators, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and future directions of Greek heritage language education in Canada. A key feature of this event will be the presentation of the Hellenic Relay Study—a two-year community-based research initiative that examines the state of Greek heritage language education in Canada. Commissioned by the Helenic Heritage Foundation, the study highlights:
✔️ The current state of Greek heritage language programs in Canada
✔️ The challenges faced by Greek schools and educational institutions
✔️ The role of technology in language preservation and learning
✔️ The bilingual rights of heritage learners and policy implications
✔️ Recommendations for strengthening Greek language education
By bringing together experts and community representatives, the event is expected to foster a collaborative dialogue among stakeholders, highlighting best practices, successful initiatives, and future directions for community-based heritage language programs in Canada.
