2021 marks an important milestone for Greek Communities across the globe as we recognize and celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, also known as the Greek War of Independence. As part of this commemoration and under the auspices of the Greece 2021 Organizing Committee, we have an event we would like to invite you to.
- Historic Plaque Unveiling – 170 Jarvis Street, Toronto:
170 Jarvis Street is a very important location in the history of the Greek Community in Toronto. In 1912, Greek immigrants across Ontario raised funds so that the community could purchase the building. It served as our first church, our first Greek School and our first community centre. It’s where the earliest Greeks founded our community.
We at the Hellenic Heritage Foundation felt it was important to honour this part of our heritage and have successfully applied to have an historical plaque erected there through Heritage Toronto.
The unveiling will take place on Saturday, October 30th at 9:30 am with Toronto Mayor – John Tory to provide remarks alongside a number of other dignitaries, media and special guests – to and help officially mark this historic event.
Please let us know if you are able to attend and join us on location as we commemorate this important part of our Greek heritage in Ontario.
